News Vis East MootCUHK Law Team Wins Four Awards at Vis (East) International Commercial Arbitration Moot  

At this year’s Vis (East) Moot, contested by some 130 law schools from around the world, the CUHK Law team won the following four awards for their performance in the competition:

Honourable Mention (top 10%) – Memorandum for Claimant
Honourable Mention (top 10%) – Memorandum for Respondent
Honourable Mention (top 10%) – Individual Advocacy (Leslie LUO – LLB)
Team Award for qualifying for the competitive round

The Vis team consists of LLB students (Lesley LUO, Thomas NIP, Kinko WONG), JD students (Herman KWAN, Emily TING, ZHAN Hongyu) and PCLL students (Katie CHAN, Kevin CHEUNG, Calvin HUANG, Kenneth IP, Lillian YIP) with student coaches from the PCLL Programme (Chester KWAN, Patrick LAU, Alan LEE, Raymond SHEK, Charlotte WONG) together with faculty coach Prof. Peter RHODES. In preparing for their oral advocacy the team was greatly helped by our Careers Director Mr. Paul MITCHARD QC.


Prof. Stephen THOMSON Receives the Faculty Award for High-Impact in Legal Scholarship 2016  

Prof. Stephen THOMSON has been selected for the Award for High-Impact in Legal Scholarship 2016 for his monograph The Nobile Officium: The Extraordinary Equitable Jurisdiction of the Supreme Courts of Scotland  (Avizandum Publishing Ltd, 2015).

The Award is created by the Faculty of Law to reward high-impact, significant scholars at the Faculty.


LLM in Chinese Business Law Ranked No. 1 in Business and Commercial Law, Far East Asia (Eduniversal Best Masters and MBAs Ranking 2017)

According to The Eduniversal Masters Ranking of the Best Masters and MBAs in the world, CUHK’s Master of Laws in Chinese Business Law (CBL) Programme has been ranked No. 1 in business and commercial law in Far East Asia in 2016-17, advancing from its 2nd place position last year. The CBL Programme has been consistently ranked as a Top 200 master programme worldwide since 2013-14.


News Tsinghua MootCUHK Law Wins the Third Prize at the 2017 Tsinghua Law School International Arbitration Moot Competition

CUHK Law participated in the 2017 Tsinghua Law School International Arbitration Moot Competition which was held at one of China’s top universities, Tsinghua University, in Beijing on May 20 – 21.

The Moot attracted the most talented students and prestigious universities which had to argue on cutting-edge issues of international investment law before a panel of arbitrators such as Ms. Yongjie LI (MOFCOM), Adrian LAI (Des Voeux Chambers) and Eric Kar-Yan NG (Gilt Chambers) and many others.

The CUHK Law team coached by Prof. Julien CHAISSE was composed of three Ph.D. candidates Ms. Xu QIAN (team-leader), Ms. Kehinde Folake OLAOYE and Mr. Dini SEJKO, and two candidates from the LLM programme in International Economic Law Ms. Yuanyuan ZHANG and Ms. Qiye ZENG. Seven CUHK Law Students Awarded Talent Development Scholarship by HKSAR Government 

Congratulations to the following students who have been awarded the Talent Development Scholarship (TDS) in 2016 – 17:

LIN Siyi (PhD in Laws), CHAN Sum Ching (LLB), LAI Sze Nga (LLB), LIU Yaoyuan (LLB), YEUNG King Lun (LLB), YOU Zhongyuan (LLB), YUNG Yuk Ting (LLB)

The TDS is established by the HKSAR Government aiming to give recognition to students who have demonstrated achievements or talent in non-academic areas and provide support for students to further develop their talent and potential.  For details about the HKSAR Government Scholarship Fund, please refer to here.


Three CUHK Law Members Receive Research Grants from the Research Grants Council (RGC)

Congratulations to the following faculty members who have received research grants for their projects from the RGC under the University Grants Committee in 2017/18:

• Prof. Jyh-An LEE received a General Research Fund grant for his project on “Open Government Data Licence in Hong Kong
• Prof. Bryan MERCURIO received a General Research Fund grant for his project entitled “When Regimes Clash on Capital Controls: Managing the Conflicting Norms and Standards of the IMF, WTO and International Investment Agreements
• Prof. Michelle MIAO received an Early Career Scheme grant for her project on “The Quality of Mercy: Examining The Role of Defence Attorneys in the Process of Capital Sentencing Mitigation in China
