IALS Asian Deans’ Forum
8 – 9 April 2016 at Shatin Campus
Co-organized by The International Association of Law Schools (IALS) and CUHK Faculty of Law, the regional forum will have the theme of “Envisioning the Future of Legal Education Globally – Inside the Crystal Ball”. Dean of law schools in Asia-Pacific regions will gather to evaluate law professors’ effectiveness and law schools’ self-assessment report built on the Madrid Protocol, explore commonalities of legal education as well as working on a template for the law schools to evaluate their processes. Regional judges will also meet to discuss current issues in legal education and the rule of law, and to help formulate judicial perspectives on educating the next generation of law graduates.

The Transpacific Partnership (TPP): A Paradigm Shift in International Trade Regulation? – Annual AWRN Conference 2016
16 – 17 May 2016 at Graduate Law Centre
Cost-hosted by Asia WTO Research Network (AWRN) and the Centre for Financial Regulation and Economic Development under CUHK Faculty of Law, the Conference will focus on the newly concluded Transpacific Partnership (TPP). Speakers will cover a wide range of issues related to and based upon the negotiations and the text of the TPP. The discussions aim to explore the new paradigm, to identify issues of concerns and their possible solutions, to contribute to the future operation of the TPP, and to identify experiences and lessons useful to other mega-FTAs.

The Political Economy of Financial Regulation
2 – 4 June 2016 at Graduate Law Centre
Recent events and trends, including the global financial crisis and the growth of the Chinese economy, have brought to light limitations of and problems in theories and methods of financial regulation. These range from tradition problems of lobby influence to ideological bias and structural flaws inherent in the nature of the rule of law itself as it governs financial transactions. This conference will take these problems as its focus. Four prominent experts will present keynote papers, joined by a number of invited principal speakers and papers selected from this call.
The conference will cover a number of financial related topics and the governing laws, including Asian financial development and ‘Washington Consensus’; Lobby power over making laws, rules and market structure; The law and politics of monetary policy; Bailouts, rescues, bail-ins, living wills and role of law in constituting the financial industry; Sociology of financial market; How and by whom benchmarks for regulatory quality are set in banking and finance, and other more topics.

Conference on Teaching and Learning in Law – “Direction in Legal Education”
3 – 4 June 2016 at Lee Shau Kee Building, Shatin Campus
Please make a note in your diaries of the dates for the Faculty’s Conference on Teaching and Learning in Law. All alumni are welcome to attend and participate. The Conference will have panels considering existing teaching methods and innovations in teaching law. There will also be discussion of the way forward for teaching law in Hong Kong. There will be a panel of alumni and existing students discussing their experiences of studying law and how law is taught in Hong Kong.
