10th Anniversary Gala Dinner will provide a perfect opportunity in this milestone year for the Faculty to celebrate the past decade’s achievements with our distinguished guests, teachers, staff members, alumni, students and friends. It will also be an invaluable occasion to look ahead to our future plans and goals. Among our year-long celebratory events, this will be the highlight that you should not miss.

Upcoming 10th Anniversary Academic Conferences:
Art, Antiquities, Heritage and Wildlife Crime in Southeast Asia (22 October 2016)
The Conference will bring together experts from law enforcement agencies, the museum sector, conservation groups and academics to discuss issues in the prevention of art crime including the looting and illicit traffic in antiquities in Southeast Asia. There will also be a panel considering Hong Kong’s place in the illicit trade in ivory with representatives from conservation and protection agencies.

Book Launch and Conference on “Sexual Violence in Armed Conflict” (7 – 8 October 2016)
The official Asian launch of the Oxford University Press book “Prosecuting Conflict-Related Sexual Violence”, edited by Baron Serge Brammertz, Chief Prosecutor of the ICTY, and his Assistant Chief, Michelle Jarvis, will be held on 7 October at CUHK LAW. It will be followed by a conference on 8 October, where certain themes in the book will be explored, including legal and strategic issues involved in prosecuting such crimes, case studies in the Asian context, and building bridges between international and national practitioners, amongst others.

Conference on Teaching and Learning in Law – ‘Directions in Legal Education’ (3 – 4 June 2016)
To celebrate its 10th Anniversary, CUHK Faculty of Law organized a conference on Teaching and Learning in Law – ‘Directions in Legal Education’. Nearly 90 educators from law schools across the globe, alongside practitioners, students and other stakeholders, attended to share their experience and to discuss common challenges and best practices in the field of legal education.
14 panel group discussions on various topics and The Big Debate with theme of ‘Navigating the (academic) law degree: are we reading the map upside down?’ were held, exploring the shifting landscape of legal education and providing meaningful reflections on the roles of teachers and learners.

The Political Economy of Financial Regulation (2 – 4 June 2016)
CUHK Faculty of Law organized a conference on ‘The Political Economy of Financial Regulation’ to mark its 10th Anniversary. Nearly 50 speakers from the world’s leading universities presented papers on political economic problems arising from financial regulation. Topics included market power in globally linked financial markets, lobbying influence over policymakers and regulators, ideological bias in the formulation of legal frameworks and structural flaws inherent in the rule of law itself. Eight plenary sessions and three presentations attracted over 80 people to attend.

The Transpacific Partnership (TPP): A Paradigm Shift in International Trade Regulation? – Annual AWRN Conference 2016 (16 – 17 May 2016)
Cost-hosted by Asia WTO Research Network (AWRN) and the Centre for Financial Regulation and Economic Development under the CUHK Faculty of Law, the Conference focused on the newly concluded Transpacific Partnership (TPP). Speakers covered a wide range of issues related to and based upon the negotiations and the text of the TPP. The discussions explored the new paradigm, identified issues of concern and their possible solutions, contributed to the future operation of the TPP, and identified experiences and lessons useful to other mega-Free Trade Agreements.

2016 Asia-Pacific Law Deans’ Forum (7 – 10 April 2016)
Co-organized by the International Association of Law Schools (IALS) and the CUHK Faculty of Law, the Forum featured the theme of “Envisioning the Future of Legal Education Globally – Inside the Crystal Ball”. Deans of law schools from around the Asia-Pacific region gathered to evaluate law professors’ effectiveness and law schools’ self-assessment reports built on the Madrid Protocol, to explore commonalities of legal education as well as to work on a template for law schools to evaluate their processes.
